Euphonix, a world leader in large-format mixing consoles
and control surfaces, today announced that the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mixed its first complete
multi-track broadcast in 5.1 surround sound during the Mormon
Tabernacle Choir's Easter Weekend celebrations. After two
years of massive renovations, the world-famous Tabernacle
opened its doors to worshipers around the globe marking the
first use of the church's latest Euphonix addition, the 32-fader
System 5-BP digital mixing console with new Euphonix EuCon
DAW control.
The Euphonix System 5-BP allows operators to mix and manage
live, high-definition, surround-sound broadcasts in addition
to post-production recordings. The System 5-BP model includes
redundant power supplies and DSP for on-air, but includes
machine control and automation for audio-post use. Thanks
to the EuCon high-speed Ethernet protocol integrated into
the Tabernacle's System 5, the choir's audio engineers bring
tracks from Pro Tools and Nuendo digital audio workstations
(DAWs), as well as DSP channels, directly onto the console
surface for mixing. The LDS church chose the EuCon Hybrid
option to ensure the consoles could perform post-production
work when not being used for on-air broadcasts.

The new System 5 joined four other Euphonix consoles owned
and operated by the LDS church, including two 32-fader System
5 consoles for HD production from the Conference Center,
another 32-fader System 5 for the Temple post-production
studio, and one 24-fader System 5 for the Brigham Young University
motion picture studio.
“We're thrilled to be a part of the Tabernacle's
recent renovations and proud that our consoles help the choir
deliver pristine quality every week,” Martin Kloiber,
Euphonix's CEO, said, “The choir's technical achievements
set the highest standards in religious broadcasts, and what
better way to christen the choir's return to the Tabernacle
than a three-day celebration over Easter weekend mixed with
56 tracks in 5.1 surround sound.”
The Tabernacle, a community-based religious, cultural and
arts center for more than 100 years, has undergone an extensive
two-year seismic upgrade. Church missionaries still show
off the Tabernacle's acoustics by literally dropping a pin.
The Tabernacle has been home to many firsts since construction
began in 1865. The first radio broadcast with a single microphone
premiered in the Tabernacle. Since 1929 the choir has performed
a weekly radio broadcast called Music and the Spoken Word,
which is the longest running continuous network broadcast
in the world. The show has been televised since the early
1960s and is now broadcast worldwide through some 1,500 radio,
television and cable stations.

DSP SuperCore

As part of the order two Euphonix DF66 DSP SuperCores will
replace the primary signal-processing engine and router currently
in the Tabernacle's System 5 console. Once installed, the
secondary DSP SuperCore will mirror the primary unit to offer
100% redundancy. If the main unit fails, the processing seamlessly
switches to the backup unit for all MADI I/O, router and
DSP processing - the industry's first digital signal processing
audio solution with total system redundancy.
The DSP SuperCore system, along with the Euphonix S5 Fusion,
Max Air and the System 5-B, will be demonstrated at NAB at
the Euphonix booth N4021 located in the North Hall of the
Las Vegas Convention Center from April 16-19. |
